Metalogix Buys StoragePoint! Frequently Asked Questions | Try It Free For 30 Days Letter from the CEO You don't have to live with boundaries around SharePoint anymore. SharePoint is a great environment for sharing content... right up to the point that it bogs down when the content database gets too large. This is an irritating problem for the administrator, because the content pours in from the same users who complain when it bogs down! Until recently SharePoint has had a one-to-one relationship between the size of the content and the size of the content database. StoragePoint fixes that problem. You can now have 2 Terabytes of content and still have less than 100GB of content database! How does StoragePoint accomplish this miracle? Using Microsoft's EBS and RBS APIs (we don't care which one, we support them both) StoragePoint takes all the BLOB content out of the SQL server database and stores it somewhere else. It might be on the same server. It might be on Tier 2 storage, Tier 3 storage, or even in Cloud Storage. You can even decide that different types of content go in different tiers of storage. No matter where you put it, you instantly get two benefits. First: Your content database size shrinks, making it more responsive, more manageable, and more reliable. Second: your file access through SharePoint actually speeds up. Smart SharePoint architects will ask, "How can my file access speed up when you're taking the files out of the SharePoint database?" Good question— and StoragePoint has a great answer: SQL Server is a great relational database and it performs at scale with relational content. For the most part, though, SharePoint doesn't have much relational content. Instead it contains documents, pictures, PDFs, videos, PowerPoint slides, Spreadsheets, forms, etc. This is a high overhead job for SQL Server and it also isn't very efficient from a disk access perspective. If you take the BLOB files outside of SQL server, when SharePoint calls one you can stream it back to SharePoint which is much, much faster. The result is that SQL Server speeds up because it's handling the relational data for which it's designed and files speed up because they’re being streamed to SharePoint clients. This isn't just good theory....it works! Before we bought StoragePoint we did due diligence calls with many of their customers. Every SharePoint Admin and every SharePoint architect was experiencing a much higher quality of life because StoragePoint was in their system. StoragePoint was meeting the high security and reliability requirements of US Federal Agencies while simultaneously meeting the cost saving and performance requirements of the Fortune 2000. BTW, you don't have to guess whether StoragePoint will work for you, you can try it yourself. We've put a 30-day free trial of StoragePoint on the Metalogix web site so that you can use it with your data and see how much better you life can be. Chris Risley
CEO Use the BLOBulator and see for yourself! If you’re wondering what the impact would be on your SharePoint content database(s), the StoragePoint BLOBulator will estimate the database size as if you were using StoragePoint. While no tool provides a 100% accurate result, you will find that the estimates are within 1% - 2% of actual numbers. The BLOBulator will also scan your SharePoint Farm to determine how many StoragePoint licenses you would need. You save money—which makes every CIO and CFO happy—while reducing IT workload and making your SharePoint implementation more manageable. StoragePoint also leverages Microsoft APIs to protect your Microsoft support. Try the BLOBulator for yourself: Click here NOTE: The BLOBulator does not collect or transmit any information about your environment. It can't harm your environment in any way. The BLOBulator will only run on a server where WSS or MOSS has been installed and the server is a single-server deployment or has joined a farm. Keep SharePoint Content BLOBs out of SQL Fact: SharePoint natively stores content (i.e. Office documents, PDFs, etc.) in SQL Server.
Fact: SQL Server databases typically reside on some of the most expensive disks in an organization’s storage infrastructure. These facts, along with many planning and manageability challenges, prevent a majority of organizations from storing large volumes of content in SharePoint. This, in turn, prevents them from realizing the full value of their SharePoint investments. - They think twice before moving the content in all those file shares into SharePoint.
- They decide to wait on that Notes-to-SharePoint migration.
- They can’t even consider migrating all their content from legacy content management platforms into SharePoint.
SharePoint Admins and SQL DBAs face many challenges with content BLOBs stored in SQL databases. You know that keeping all your content on Tier 1 storage is not sustainable. You don’t want to plan for and manage your content in 100GB chunks or risk falling outside of operational windows on disaster recovery and indexing tasks. StoragePoint is an active storage solution, not an archive. You don't have to worry about table fragmentation in SQL or regularly running dbshrink operations to reclaim unused space because the content never gets into SQL Server in the first place. StoragePoint immediately relocates content to the configured storage end-point. And you can define as many end-points, to as many different storage platforms, as you like. You decide based on your SLA and isolation requirements. Put your mission-critical content on high availability storage and push everything else to a less expensive on-premise or cloud storage tier. The Document Management product was highly underutilized for their purposes and required expensive specialists to maintain the complex infrastructure. In a proof of concept, they discovered that the functionality of the application could be easily ported to SharePoint. The only obstacle that kept them from implementing this solution on SharePoint 2007 was Microsoft’s recommendation to limit content database size to 100GB. Cimarex had considerably more than 100GB of invoices in their existing system and didn't want to carve them up into different site collections, which would have resulted in taxonomy design, find-ability, and retention challenges. "To overcome the storage limitation we selected StoragePoint for its simple, elegant design," says Ken Foster, Director, Application Development at Cimarex Energy. Ken adds, "It gave us the ability to quickly implement a replacement solution on SharePoint that met the business need and allowed IT to leverage a cost-effective technology stack that is pervasively used within Cimarex and one that our staff is trained to support."
