Notes
Office document link correction
When Word and Excel documents contain links to one another, the most time onerous file migration task is fixing broken links. Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition eliminated this problem by completely automating the link correction process.
Auto-generated file system reports
Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition enables rapid report generation for any segment of a file system. Reports are output in the form of dynamically generated Word 2007 documents that describe file sizes, types, and authorship history.
Metadata based file filtering
Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition can filter its file system views along multiple dimensions of metadata. For example, it is often useful to only look at files you are interested in migrating by file size, type, or creation date.
Migration reporting
Produce a migration report for any component of the file system based on what has already been migrated by Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition.
Add, update, delete or merge metadata
Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition simplifies metadata management. Through the application UI, metadata can be created and associated with any file and migrated to SharePoint.
Extract Office metadata
Valuable file metadata is often locked in hard to get Office metadata properties. Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition enables the extraction of this data to application metadata columns that can then be mapped to SharePoint during migration.
CSV file import and export
CSV files can be generated for any property set on any set of files. CSV exports are valuable for basic reporting but moreso because they provide the ability to distribute file sets for metadata augmentaion and amelioration. Once data has been updated, CSV files can be re-imported into Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition for mapping and migration to SharePoint fields and managed metadata columns.
Migration job management
Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition separates migration job definition from execution. This enables several important use cases. Multiple migration jobs can be defined and then run altogether in batch. As long as a job is maintained in the history, it can re-run multiple times. Previously defined jobs can even be re-configured with different settings and re-run to ensure that accurate migration results can be iteratively and efficiently achieved.
Comprehensive logging
Log files are created and stored for all migrations. These files give a breakdown of all actions that took place during a migration.
Content Type mapping
All migrated files can be mapped to any out-of-box or custom SharePoint content type available on the target server.
PowerShell integration
All migration operations can be saved as PowerShell commands, complete with migration options. Saved commands can then be customized with business specific migration logic and executed in the Metalogix provided PowerShell console, or scheduled to run automatically.
User Mapping Across Active Directory Domains
File system users can be mapped across the Active Directory domains during a migration. This facilitates domains merging or splitting during migration, as well as to migration to new AD domains.
Limited Script crawling (JavaScript, Flash, Active X, VB script)
Certain types of script can be crawled and migrated by FSMM. While there are a few different types of Script languages that can be migrated (JavaScript, Active X, Flash, etc.), Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition only supports Client Side Script. Any script that can be interacted with on a page, is not supported.
File Created and Modified metadata preservation
File created and modified metadata is automatically preserved when files are migrated to SharePoint using the Metalogix SharePoint Extensions web service or the SharePoint object model.
SharePoint interactions through supported API's only
Interactions with the SharePoint are through supported APIs only. This ensures that your organization's Microsoft service and support agreements are adhered to by Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition. The product provides three ways to interact with SharePoint:
- Metalogix SharePoint Extenstions Web Service: Metalogix provides a web service that can be installed on your target SharePoint farm to facilitate remote, SharePoint object model driven interactions.
- SharePoint Object Model: Optionally, Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition can interact directly with the SharePoint object model if the client is run on the SharePoint server.
- SharePoint native web services: Migration Manager for SharePoint File Share Edition provides the ability to interact with SharePoint through it's native web services. This approach is ideal for situations where the client does not have direct access to the server. Some product functionality is not supported through native web services.
Custom template support and mapping
Custom templates can be used during the migration. Before beginning your migration, please ensure that your custom template has been manually moved to your target site. Once there you can migrate and map content to the custom template.
