Externalize BLOBs to shrink Content DBs

SharePoint content grows every day. New documents and file share content pour into SharePoint continuously. SQL databases are not design to handle this volume of content. SharePoint performance can’t keep up and the SQL storage architecture does not cost-effectively scale to support this growth or your needs. StoragePoint solves these performance and scalability challenges using proven and trusted Remote BLOB Store (RBS) technology to externalize content, similar to the Microsoft Office365 storage architecture, but for your SharePoint.

SQL databases are not optimized for storing the unstructured content like documents, images and videos that dominates SharePoint. These unstructured objects, known as BLOBs, degrade performance and create SharePoint database sprawl, which is hard, time consuming and expensive to manage. StoragePoint shrinks SQL databases in SharePoint up to 98% by moving BLOBs outside those databases to storage of your choosing. This enables SharePoint content databases to remain lean, efficient and high performing.

Speed uploads and downloads

StoragePoint empowers you to store SharePoint content wherever you want, be it on SAN, NAS, CAS or in the Cloud. Choose the storage tier optimized for your organization’s cost and performance needs. High priority, frequently accessed content can be stored in your SAN, while infrequently accessed or content that needs long-term retention can be stored in the Cloud. StoragePoint constantly monitors content and automatically moves it to the appropriate storage tier based on frequency of access, age, version and metadata rules.

SharePoint content databases quickly hit a performance wall - Microsoft recommends not exceeding 200 GB for active content as bloated databases slow search and file upload and download speeds. However, the average SharePoint environment is larger than a terabyte. StoragePoint breaks through SharePoint performance limits, doubling typical upload and download speeds. By moving unstructured content outside SharePoint where much higher read/write speeds are realized, StoragePoint allows you to efficiently manage SharePoint environments of any size.

Office365 externalizes content too

Microsoft learned about running a high performing SharePoint environment for the first time with Office365. The Office365 storage architecture is fundamentally different than the out-of-the-box SharePoint storage architecture. Office365 relies on BLOB externalization to move unstructured content out of SQL databases and into Azure to achieve scalability, performance, and to avoid SQL database limits. BLOB externalization has been used successfully by StoragePoint customers for many years to deliver high performance and cost-effective scalability for on-premises SharePoint deployments.

Migrate Large Volumes of File Share Content icon

Migrate Large Volumes of File Share Content

StoragePoint catalogs file shares into SharePoint without moving the files through the SharePoint API layers. This provides a low-fidelity, high-speed migration capability for SharePoint. Incorporate terabytes of important corporate data without the laborious process of attempting to import this data. Cataloged file share content can then use SharePoint's features, such as permissions, workflows, alerts, search, and metadata. Metalogix has additional products to support a full-fidelity migration (see Content Matrix).

Direct Integration with Central Administration

StoragePoint works natively with any version of SharePoint — from WSS 3.0 to SharePoint 2016. It's a .NET application that uses the standard Remote BLOB Storage (RBS) and External BLOB Storage (EBS) interfaces. It installs in minutes on a single Web Front End and replicates throughout the farm. You configure and monitor StoragePoint from the familiar Central Administration interface.

Unlimited File Size: Eliminate the 2 GB File Size Barrier icon

Eliminate SharePoint File Size Barriers

You implemented SharePoint to manage all of your content in one place. Unfortunately, if your files were too large, you couldn’t — until now. StoragePoint shatters the 2GB limit of SharePoint 2013 or earlier versions, and the 10GB limit of SharePoint 2016. If you have 3D CAD files, high-def videos or software builds that you want to manage together with the rest of your content, StoragePoint is for you.

Unlimited Storage Potential icon

Unlimited Storage Potential

Users put more content into SharePoint every day and expect content will continue to be easy to find and fast to access. However, this content growth creates performance and data management challenges. StoragePoint solves these pains by leaving unstructured content on appropriate storage tiers, while still managing content from within SharePoint. This leaves SharePoint a high performance application while enabling unlimited growth of content.

Avoid Content DB Sprawl icon

Avoid Content DB Sprawl

Splitting content databases is one strategy to mitigate slow performance due to large amounts of content. But splitting databases can multiply management headaches and incur additional license and maintenance fees. By shrinking content databases by 98% or more, StoragePoint eliminates the need to split Content Databases to maintain SharePoint performance.

Avoid the Limitations of RBS FILESTREAM icon

Avoid the Limitations of RBS FILESTREAM

Microsoft's sample RBS provider, FILESTREAM, wasn’t ever intended to be an enterprise class solution. It is an example of how RBS can be used but it lacks many of the features needed for prime time like compression and encryption. StoragePoint on the other hand was designed to support all your SharePoint storage needs. From rules for what content to externalize to storage tiering on a wide range of storage platforms, StoragePoint has it all covered.

WORM Compliant Storage icon

WORM Compliant Storage

If your organization uses SharePoint, but needs to comply with SEC Rule 17A-4(F) requirements, StoragePoint allows you to use WORM devices to protect record files from overwrite or erasure. The ability to determine where you store SharePoint content gives you the flexibility and freedom to use SharePoint while still meeting tough regulatory and compliance rules, such as SEC Rule 17A-4(F).

Minimize Storage Needs by Retaining Only One BLOB Instance

SharePoint stores multiple copies of the same BLOB if it's referenced in more than one SharePoint library, which consumes storage that could be used for other purposes. StoragePoint recognizes duplicates and will store only one copy of the BLOB no matter how many times it's referenced in SharePoint, reducing storage required for SharePoint content.

Encryption: Slam the Door on Unauthorized Access icon

Encryption: Slam the Door on Unauthorized Access

Unauthorized users can access SharePoint content via SQL permissions. StoragePoint closes that back door by encrypting content during transmission and storage with 256-bit AES encryption.

Lightning fast, total backup icon

Lightning-fast backups

Traditional backup tools are not viable as SharePoint farms grower larger. Long backups puts your company at risk for data loss – the longer the backup, the larger the data loss risk. StoragePoint can shorten SharePoint backups by up to 50X – a massive improvement in backup capability, regardless of the backup tool you use. Additionally, BLOBs, once externalized, are continuously and immediately backed up by StoragePoint, resulting in incredible protection without excessive backup copies.
