SharePoint Security Vulnerabilities: A Crack in the Windshield

By Angie Hohensee | July 11, 2017

We’ve all cringed at the distinctive sound of a rock hitting the windshield while driving 60 mph down the highway. At that point, it’s only a matter of time before the chip spiders and destroys the entire window, effectively costing you a fair lump of cash. However, even if you can’t avoid rogue pebbles flying about on the road, taking the time to get your windshield inspected can save you from a major headache later on.

This is exactly how a data breach works. It’s critical that healthcare organizations understand the vulnerabilities of their system and ensure that they are HIPAA compliant, especially since breaches can happen at a moment’s notice.

SharePoint Security Vulnerabilities

It all starts as a tiny chip in your content collaboration and file sharing platform. If you fail to detect the areas at risk, you could end up paying millions in fines. Additionally, the size of your organization doesn’t matter; if you don’t follow HIPAA regulations, you risk putting your company and users’ PHI at stake. When it comes to SharePoint security vulnerabilities, there are plenty of consequences that can severely damage your organization.

Avoid Data Breaches

Metalogix recently teamed with the Ponemon Institute to conduct a study on how most organizations fail to protect their content from accidental exposure or a data breach. In fact, the report found that one in two companies that uses SharePoint has had a confirmed data breach in the last 24 months.

The HIPAA Journal states, "While file sharing tools and cloud computing services may incorporate all the necessary protections to ensure data is secured and cannot be accessed by unauthorized individuals, over the past few years, there have been numerous cases where human error has resulted in misconfigurations. Those errors have led to data breaches."

It may only being a matter of time before your organization is faced with a security breach, but you shouldn’t stop using collaborative platforms altogether. Alternatively, what you should do is seek out expert advice on governance and security solutions.
