THE CHALLENGE

ATS Automation provides innovative, custom designed, built and installed manufacturing solutions to their customers. Each manufacturing project undertaken by ATS follows a project management methodology that relies on SharePoint (MOSS 2007) project sites for storing the project information and enabling collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.

To improve project efficiency and collaboration, ATS wanted to design and implement a solution that would allow external users – mainly customer project resources – secure and selective access to project information.

THE SOLUTION

ATS determined that a MOSS extranet, supported by bi-directional replication technology would be the ideal solution to address its need for secure external collaboration and information sharing. In just four months, the ATS I.T. group designed and implemented a MOSS 2007 Extranet solution consisting of an Internet-facing MOSS 2007 farm.

To address its replication requirements, ATS selected Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint 1. Replicator for SharePoint is used to manage selective, one-way or two-way replication between the project sites on the internal MOSS and the extranet MOSS sites. External users are granted read or edit permissions to the replicated content, thus eliminating the need for back and forth emailing of project information. The complete solution is highly secure, including such features as external user provisioning and authentication, malware protection, and secure segregation of project sites.

THE RESULTS

The combination of Microsoft SharePoint and Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint has successfully increased ATS productivity on new manufacturing projects by enhancing and streamlining collaboration between the internal project team and the customer. Improved communication and information sharing helps address potential challenges sooner and speed approval processes.

The availability of sophisticated replication mechanisms allows selective and workflow-controlled content replication. These security measures and the other controls ATS implemented around project information meant that extending the MOSS content management capabilities to external users actually reduced the risks previously encountered by ATS which were associated with email communications.

Following the implementation, an average of 40% of the active internal ATS project sites require a SharePoint extranet site supported by Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint, with an average of 4-5 external users per site.
