Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) is a world leading marine contractor in the offshore oil and gas industry. Their headquarters are in Leiden, The Netherlands, with a number of engineering, commercial and project offices throughout the world. They transport, install and remove all types of offshore facilities. The unique abilities of HMC’s fleet of heavy lift vessels in the area of lifting capacity, motion behavior and large deck area, has given them a reputation for superior workability and station-keeping capabilities.

With multiple offshore business locations, high-powered companies have a growing need to incorporate bi-directional communication and an easily accessible information database. In fast-paced work environments, accessibility and up-to-date information from all areas of operations become the key to greater productivity and an increase in the speed of daily business interactions.
Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) caters to the offshore oil and gas industry by transporting, installing and removing all types of offshore facilities. HMC uses SharePoint for its daily operations – sharing information between its centrally located SharePoint environment in Leiden, Netherlands, three main vessels and a fabrication yard.
Due to bandwidth and satellite latency limitations, communication of information between Leiden and offshore vessels is not optimal. Because of the cranes and other factors on the vessels, there are periods in which no data communication is possible with the central Leiden network. HMC could not, as a result, guarantee that all necessary information on SharePoint was available on the vessels at all times. This created a need for users to be able to access SharePoint locally in order to retrieve the necessary information.
We looked at a number of potential vendors in the market, but quite quickly focused on Metalogix Replicator as the absolute ideal fit.
The Metalogix Replicator solution is seamless when looking at SharePoint. There are other products that do not have the level of integration that Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint does, and it really does make a difference in the day to day management process.
HMC concluded early on that their solution for these kind of information sharing and communication down-time with the vessels, namely “store and forward” would need to be extended to SharePoint.
“We looked at a number of potential vendors in the market, but quite quickly focused on Metalogix Replicator as the absolute ideal fit,” said James Soulsby, Senior Specialist Engineer, Heerema Marine Contractors.
Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint allows HMC to have the bi-directional communication, on a secure network, necessary for their daily interaction and database updating needs. With Metalogix Replicator, HMC no longer requires their personnel in locations other Leiden to access the main SharePoint for project information.
Using HMC’s secure network, Metalogix Replicator enables the bi-directional communication necessary for operations. As users work and develop content on their local SharePoint sites, Metalogix Replicator replicates changes and additions to the other SharePoint sites. As a result, users can now directly access their local SharePoint sites for project information instead of attempting to access the Leiden SharePoint site. SharePoint administrators can also set and change permissions for sites, libraries, and documents, which are replicated as well. This ensures contractors have access to only the content they need to complete their work.
By using Metalogix Replicator, HMC can now effectively support a number of processes, resulting in a steady support of their supply chain and projects. Its efficiency has been significantly increased on its SharePoint databases, allowing an easy flow of information to and from offshore vessels, regardless of slow bandwidth and satellite communication. Furthermore, Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint allows HMC’s contractors to communicate with the central SharePoint environment on a secure network, processing and receiving information quickly without the hassle of emails.
“The Metalogix Replicator solution is seamless when looking at SharePoint,” said Soulsby. “There are other products that do not have the level of integration that Metalogix Replicator for SharePoint does, and it really does make a difference in the day to day management process.”
It is an effective solution that successfully caters to HMC’s need for a “store and forward” bi-directional communication and information system. Metalogix Replicator is also easily implemented, and manageable as a result of the various integrated tools within the program. Such tools include the Metalogix Connect for Replicator, which minimizes the time spent in monitoring replication processes.
The Metalogix solution allows HMC to push SharePoint content to its vessels’ local servers, while ensuring its documents are up-to-date. The benefits are numerous — massive scalability, augmented productivity, enhanced collaboration, streamlined communication, improved security controls, faster approval processes, and a resultant ability to address and identify potential challenges sooner.
The success of Replicator is evident on all three offshore vessel sites, as well as the main Leiden office. Furthermore, Replicator proved indispensable during the construction of HMC’s fourth vessel, where bandwidth was significantly limited.
